Topological
Topology, a branch of Mathematics, abstractly describes the nature of shapes. In Physics, the definition becomes tangible, as the properties of materials become observable, ultimately their topology dictates the interactions with one another. Sometimes when a material is grown in a lab, an additional layer unexpectedly grows; therefore, unintentionally changing the mathematical (and therefore physical) properties. In this series, layers of fabric are intentionally created from seams and folds. Select seams are reinforced by hand stitching on the ground. I then start painting. These seams and layers of canvas affect how the paint is visible on the surface. More hand stitching is added to the seams and then sometimes additional layers of paint are added.
The companion artists’s book unfolds to a full sheet revealing the sketches for the pieces in my Topological artwork series in connection with the writing generated in it’s development. The visual story of the drawings become the caption to the concrete poetry at the top of the page once fully unfolded. However, the experience is altered when reading through the book in a more traditional manner, allowing the moderate translucency of the paper to reveal traces of the underlying words and/or sketches. Each folded page is a layer of strata to observe and unearth, the addition of a single layer moderately obscures what is to come. (Edition run of 25)
