Phronesis

Consider the process of learning and cultivating knowledge - the continual layering which occurs. Phronesis in Aristotelian terms is the form of wisdom that propels an individual to make and reflect upon choices. Often translated as “prudence,” this kind of understanding is learned through action and interaction. Starting firmly grounded in mirrored and rotational symmetries, the series becomes more improvisational through its development - similar to a jazz musician having a grounding in musical scales to build complex improvisations. The works in my Phronesis series incorporate the repetition and alteration of the Rhodes embroidery stitch and reverse appliqué. Worked with multiple plys of fine white silk threads, the square and rectangular forms gently emerge and recede from the viewer - like the play between innate and refined knowledge. Light is integral in emphasizing the textures of the laid threads and the rhythms emerging through the series.

Writing has deepened my understanding of the structures and works that I create in studio. How a piece is described in words can be as telling as the image itself. The creation of artist’s books have given me a way to further engage with the narratives present in my work. The inspiration for my books comes from the fluidity of the thoughts, words and sketches that evolve while working through the concepts and forms present. The structures and the materials of the books emphasize the concepts present in their respective artwork series.

Phronesis (Book) is comprised of 4 hexa-tetraflexagons (six faced, four sided folding shapes) that fold and open in different directions to reveal each of the six faces - with either hands-stamped text or a screen printed image from the series itself. Moving through each of these sections is analogous to the processes of developing understanding and awareness. Initially the process might be a bit frustrating but over time, the folding and openings become meditative and provide discoveries.

The Words of Insight series was creates as echoes of the production process of the Phronesis (Book). It is a limited unique print series creates with custom archival inked stamps on watercolor paper. Each piece utilizes the key words from the artist’s book and turns them into graphic elements.
